About

The song He Called Me Baby was written in 1961 by Harlan Howard as “She Called…” but was covered as “He Called Me Baby” by many women including Pasty Cline, Jessie Colter, Dinah Shore, Ella Washington, Nancy Wilson and Candi Staton – you may remember hearing Candi Staton’s version sampled in the 2009 song Kandi by One Eskimo. To me, having been called “baby’ by men who didn’t mean anything by it, and/or used it because all women are interchangeable so “baby” works for any and all of us, or because they were dating several women at a time and it’s easier than trying to remember the names of all their women or they wanted to avoid the drama when they called one of us by the wrong name, it works much better as “He Called Me Baby” and is as relevant now as it was back then because men are men and the male of the species hasn’t changed much in thousands of years let alone the past 50 – they might dress a bit differently and have different toys and weapons but they’re still men.
